Hell is Us is an action-adventure game that tasks you with solving an ancient mystery in a country ravaged by civil war and terrifying monsters.
The fictional nation of Hadea has two major factions: the progressive Sabinians and the religious Palomists. A civil war has broken out between these two groups, and the multinational Organized Nations have deployed well-meaning but ineffective peacekeeping forces to try to stop the war.
Enter our hero, a young adult man who knows that he was born in Hadea and doesn't remember much else from his past. After joining the ON, he abandons his post as a peacekeeper and walks into the heart of the conflict in the hopes of finding his missing parents before they're gone forever.
The situation only gets worse when a terrifying "Calamity" descends on the land — strange, pale white creatures have appeared throughout Hadea and are indiscriminately killing anyone who gets too close to them. Worse, these creatures are totally immune to any conventional weaponry, rendering all guns completely useless when fighting against them.
Players must explore multiple semi-open-world locations in Hadea, solving puzzles and helping people with little more than a compass to guide their way. Hell is Us doesn't hold your hand — there are no quest markers, and the in-game "Investigation System" leaves it to you to figure out where you should go next with the clues you have to hand.
You won't be alone in your journey. As you move across Hadea, you'll pick up an armored APC that serves as a mobile base, a helpful drone to assist you in combat, and a jaded journalist who will conduct research and help you figure out what's happening in the world. Other allies will help you out where they can, especially if you help them first.
