Forever Skies HUD Explanation

Using the Extractor to Consume A Floating Battery in Forever Skies

  1. Notifications: If you pick up (or drop) an item, it will be listed on the left side of the screen. Any warnings from your suit's A.I. will also appear here. Your active objectives will be displayed at the top left of the screen above the notifications section.
  2. Compass: This is a standard compass that tells you which direction you're facing.
  3. Health: The typical health bar. If this reaches 0, you die.
  4. Hunger: Your hunger meter. You can fill it by eating food. If this reaches 0, you starve to death.
  5. Thirst: Your thirst meter. You can fill it by drinking water. If this reaches 0, you die from dehydration.
  6. Energy: Your energy meter. You can refill this by sleeping in a bed or by using certain consumables. When running or using hand tools, a Stamina bar will appear to the right of this. Your maximum stamina is capped by your current Energy. If your Energy reaches zero, you collapse and sleep on the floor for a short time.
  7. Armor: If you're wearing any armor, its durability will be shown here.
  8. Flashlight: If you have a Flashlight equipped, its remaining battery life will be shown here.
  9. Context Menu Options: Special context menus and context controls (such as the Item Wheel) are displayed around your hotbar.
  10. Hotbar: Your hotbar is where you can store up to 5 items, typically tools. The first slot is dedicated to your Extractor, which cannot be removed.
  11. Tool Status: The status of your tool (such as its energy level) or weapon (such as its ammo count) is shown on the bottom left of the screen.

Starter Guide Walkthrough

Now that we've explained the HUD, it's time to get going with the walkthrough portion of our Forever Skies guide!

Choosing Your Difficulty

Your first step will be to choose your difficulty. It's spelled out in a fairly straightforward manner on the starting screen. Combat isn't too difficult all around; the main thing you'll want to worry about is how many items you lose if you die.

It's possible that you could be carrying valuable items when you meet your end, and it could cost you one (or more) hours of gameplay recovering them. If you're particularly risk-averse and/or you hate losing inventory items on death, we'd recommend selecting Easy or Normal difficulty.

Exiting the Drop Pod

You've landed on Earth! Take the photo and the Medkit on the wall, then blow open the emergency hatch so you can step out into the world.

Go across the bridge and loot the area; make sure to get the tablet on the desk. Then head upstairs and take the Solid State Battery out of the box attached to the radio tower.

Taking the Solid State Battery in Forever Skies

Head back downstairs and put the Solid State Battery into the breaker box wired to the laptop, then read the message.

Go around the corner and you'll see a yellow door with a yellow light above it; powering up the laptop also powers up the door.

The room behind the yellow door will have a few more machine parts. Further in, you'll find the Suit Printer which allows you to print some smaller items from your inventory.

Grabbing the Broken Extractor in Forever Skies

You'll also want to pick up the Broken Extractor. This, combined with the Machine Parts, allows you to craft an Extractor; the Extractor allows you to break down items into raw materials.

Extracting Resources

In this same room, you'll find a yellow barrel that you can break down with the Extractor. The Extractor has automatically been placed on your hotbar, so press the appropriate key to bring it up.

Collecting Synthetics with the Extractor in Forever Skies

This will give you a few of the Synthetics crafting material, along with the crafting recipes for the Empty Bottle and the Synthetic Compound in your Suit Printer.

You can look out the hole in the wall to dismantle flying debris and other items with your Extractor. This will deplete the battery on your Extractor, but you can recharge it by holding right-click or R.

Collecting Silicon with the Extractor in Forever Skies

Head back to the area where you started. You'll see more metal girders on buildings that you can dismantle. You can also remove a metal plate under the stairs by the bridge to find a few more items.

Discovering the Airship

Go forward again to the room with the yellow door where you found the Extractor. Head upstairs and you'll see a piece of debris blocking the stairs. Remove the debris, move forward, and you'll see a half-completed Airship and some more areas you can salvage items from.

Reaching the Unfinished Airship in Forever Skies

First, walk to the right and you'll see another breaker box with a tablet next to it. Open the breaker box and collect the Solid State Battery, then read the tablet on the table next to it. This is the Airship To-Do List, which tells you everything you need to know to get this small Airship in the sky.

  • Place the Helm
  • Extract the wall blocking the workshop
  • Get the Research Station
  • Research and build the Device Fabricator
  • Build Water and Food devices
  • Get a Scanner tool to scan the Engine wreck

Remove the wall to the left of the breaker box and Airship To-Do List tablet, and you'll find the Research Station. Pick it up and place it in the back of your Airship.

Placing the Research Station in the Airship in Forever Skies

Head back to the room that had the Research Station. Loot and dismantle everything you can. Then, exit this room and head back to your Airship.

Insert a Solid State Battery into the Research Station. Then, interact with the Research Station and research the Device Fabricator. Then, place the Device Fabricator in your Airship — you'll unlock a ton of new crafting recipes.

Learning to Survive

You're likely running low on Water and Food at this point, so craft a Water Condenser, Water Purifier, and Condenser Membrane. Place the Water Condenser on the outer deck and place a Condenser Membrane in it. Then, place the Water Purifier on the wall.

The Water Condenser will immediately start collecting Water from the air. Wait a bit and you'll be able to bottle Dirty Water. You'll need 2 Empty Bottles for this process; if you neglected to pick any of them up, you can craft them.

Bottle the Dirty Water, then place it in the Water Purifier. When it's clean, take the Clean Water out and drink it. Repeat this process until your Water meter is full and you have some spare Clean Water. You'll need to craft Condenser Membranes after they're used up for each cycle of the Water Condenser.

Your next step should be to produce an Insect Lure at the Device Fabricator. Place it on the Lure (the thing that looks like a fishing pole) and lower the Lure. While the Lure is working, craft and place an Electric Cooker.

Fill the Electric Water with some Clean Water, then wait for the Lure to catch something. Place the animal you've caught (which is likely a Dust Moth) into the Electric Cooker and cook it. Then, eat the cooked food to restore your hunger.

You now know how to get food and water. Repeat the processes for collecting Clean Water and cooked food until your core stats are restored.

Scanning and Researching

Next, go back to your Research Station and research the Scanner. Turn around 180 degrees and explore the final building in the area. You'll find a yellow ladder inside; climb up and you'll find another Solid State Battery.

Finding Another Solid State Battery on the Tutorial Tower in Forever Skies

Go back to your Airship and craft a Scanner, then equip it. Turn around and you'll see a red damaged Airship Engine lying against the wall. Use the Scanner on it to learn the blueprint.

Research "Engine and Fuel" in the Research Station. When that's done, build an Engine and place it on the far side catwalk.

Go back to the Fabricator and produce 100 Synthetic Fuel and load it into your Engine. You are now capable of departing the area, but let's not leave just yet.

Placing the First Engine on Your Airship in Forever Skies

Research the Repair Patch and the Airship Builder. Craft 10 Repair Patches (2 batches of 5) in your inventory. When you have the Repair Patches, place them on the damaged areas to repair them. Make sure your Airship is fully repaired before departing.

When you're ready to leave, look in the direction the Airship is facing and you'll see some lights in the distance.

The Lights in the Distance from the Tutorial Tower in Forever Skies

The number of lights and the color of those lights mark different potential types of destination on the map (which you don't have yet). Your first goal will be to fly to the single orange light a short distance away.

Lights in the Distance

The light in the distance is powered by a Solid State Battery in a breaker box just like the ones you got at the starting location. Tracking down these towers and taking the Solid State Batteries is essential for your day-to-day operations. It will also darken the icon on the map, ensuring you don't revisit areas you've already cleared.

The first tower you'll reach is a Radio Tower. This has a number of new items you can unlock with your Scanner and some loot to grab. A list in your menu allows you to track which items you've found at a particular Tower type and which items you have not yet found.

The Discovery Sets List in Forever Skies

Head to the first Radio Tower, loot it, and use your Scanner to unlock new items. The key items you'll be trying to find are the Wrecked Location Finder (which is the map) and the Wrecked Metal Collector.

The Wrecked Metal Collector is like the Lure; you can put a magnetic head on the Wrecked Metal Collector and it will hang off of the side of your Airship and automatically pull up pieces of Metal.

The Wrecked Location Finder, however, is much more useful. Once crafted, you can stick it to the window of your Airship's cockpit and see the locations of nearby Towers.

Loot the entire Radio Tower as best as you can. Then, craft and install the Location Radar; this is the functional version of the Wrecked Location Finder. You'll see an orange marker on the Location Radar.

Heading to the Orange Marker at the Start of Forever Skies

Heading to Noah's Hideout

This is your first story destination — you're searching for Noah's Hideout. Get your Airship moving and you'll see a massive tower with a concrete landing pad at the marker on your Location Radar.

Many Towers have these concrete landing pads. They're excellent for upgrading your ship since they're a safe place to land. Land your Airship on the concrete pad and start exploring this mysterious Ruined Location.

Wind Farms have Helium, a crafting resource that is essential for expanding your Airship's balloon. This, in turn, allows you to increase the size of your Airship, giving you more room for crafting stations, storage, and creature comforts.

Exploring the Ruins of Earth

The next few steps of the To-Do list will lead you to the Underdust Laboratory, the next major step in exploring the story; you can choose to immediately head there or you can spend some time exploring points of interest on the map. Your adventure is only beginning — have fun, and don't forget to check out our other Forever Skies guides below!
